Garden Seed

https://www.wisdomforpennies.com

Hello everyone. I hope this cloudy day finds you at peace as you await the fall weather that is coming soon. Here in North Florida, I for one will be so happy when it arrives to stay awhile.

As I was cutting up my pumpkin to can, I thought that I would save the seeds, as we never know what next year may bring or possibly not bring to us. There also has not been very many cans of pumpkin on the store shelves in very many states, as people have been saying that they are not finding it. So it was canning time for me.

I also like to save seeds from heirloom tomatoes that have the greatest taste that you could imagine. I used to grow about 50 plants each spring and save the seed for the next spring.

This is simple to do, all you have to do is scrape out the seeds you want to save. Leave some pulp with them and put them into a bowl of water. I put this in the kitchen window so I don’t forget it.Let it sit for 3 days so it will look a little moldy and stink.

Then after that third day is over. You pour the seeds into a strainer (sieve) etc. Rinse well with water. Put into a clean bowl that is filled with water and about 5 drops of bleach. This kind of repels insects from eating the seeds that you plant. The first part that gets moldy seems to preserve the seeds or maybe fertilize them. I forget! I do forget sometimes as I am 61. But I do try to stay sharp with everything in my life.

Let these seeds sit only for 1 day in the bleach water. Then just drain off the water and spread out the seeds to dry out. As I live in an apartment, I put them on a plate in front of a box fan. Now you put these in a labled and dated freezer bag and store in the freezer until the next planting season comes around.

I do believe that they stored all of those fascinating and very best tasting heirloom seeds this way or we would not even have had the pleasure of growing them in these days. I do hope that you will try this for yourself and I do hope that you will buy heirloom seeds to garden with. As the seeds now days have been modified to just grow for one time only and not grow again. But the difference of great seed and bad is to buy heirloom seed to plant and then save your own every year.

I grew some new kind of corn many years ago and it did not even know what it was or how to even grow. It had tiny ears like the Chinese corn in their recipes and on another side of the bush it grew a half of an ear with only the top part filled out and the bottom of the ear was bare. Another ear grew on only one side of the ear and not the other side.

Needless to wonder what will eating this corn does to your body? I went back to my heirloom silver queen corn that grew many large filled out ears on each corn plant and sweet as honey too. You could eat it right out in the garden, which I did teach all the kids to try it.

I put up some much corn in those years, in the jars and in the freezer also. And the last 99 ears went to the soup kitchen to feed the needy. So you can see the difference in the quality and productivity of the new seeds that are sold now-days from the old-days!

Then you will have the very best! And heirloom seeds will reproduce every-time. Thank you for visiting and please do come back soon as I post on Thur-Sat- and Tuesdays. And please share my posts so that my blog will continue to grow and even more important, is to try to help others learn stuff, if they so choose to.

Prepping Food Storage

Good morning everyone on the glorious Saturday morning. I hope you are doing well and that your spirit lives with joyful hope. I know that I do and pray for all of you.

Ok, today I want to discuss with you, how easy it is do do a little prepping with storing food or purchasing food that can last for 30 years, if need be.

I am not USDA or anyone highly trained. I just study a lot of things, in this life. I always have, that is the very reason for this blog of mine. I enjoy learning, even at a young 61. So that I can hopefully teach others to take care of themselves and their family also.

This is a very cheap food to prep for storing and it will fill up the tummy, if you happen to be really hungry, sometime in the future. You never know what is coming next in these days and times! If some of us pass through it, there will be many sad stories for our future generations.

Well, this post went haywire and now I am repairing it! These 3 boxes of instant potato flakes will fill up a 2 -gallon food storage bucket. Then you add about 8 bay leaves on the top of the flakes.

Last of all you put your moisture absorber on the top and close up the bucket. Make sure to write the item and the date on the bucket. You can buy your absorbers or make your own, either way. I use the cat litter (CLEAN) mini crystal unscented. I just put some in a coffee filter and staple it shut or 1/2 of an envelope and staple it shut. This will keep moisture out of your food. But do not add this to salt or sugar as they will harden like a rock. Just put bay leaves only on top of those in the bucket or jar, etc. This is just the way I do it, and I am no USDA professional. I just love to study many things about life. Thanks for visiting and please do come back. While you are already here please feel free to look towards the bottom of my page for more posts, or the archives so that my little blog can grow. I post on Tue-Wed and Saturdays.

Make your own absorbers

This is for the preppers out there. You know who you are, the ones that believe in storing food. I believe even 10 years would do for the times that we are in today! I have decided that I am not happy with this procedure using steel wool so I am making changes to use the cat litter ,absorbent crystals, method instead.

You use the new type of unscented, mini crystals. These absorb all moisture and has no smell. I just use an envelope and put 6 tbsp. in it, Then I seal the envelope and fill a food-grade bucket with wheat berries and then place on the top of the berries and seal the bucket.

I did try an experiment that used a small amount of crystals in a cup. I then poured a small amount of water over the crystals and it dried up all the water. I did this twice and had the same result. Then I added three times the water to the same mix and it took some days, but I had the same good result. No water.

For a baggie of food just use paper to make a tiny envelope and put 1 tbsp. of the cat litter in it and staple, it shut. I learned this off of the internet as I was searching, so, no I have not lost my mind. On the steel wool idea, I felt that shaving might have worked their way into the stored food. So I changed this. I am so very sorry to have misled anyone.

And you want to make sure that it stays safe and editable after all that food prepping work that you had to go through and after spending a lot of money on your supplies, you could use a price break.

Well, here it is! You already know that you could be using mylar bags or not and then you still need the oxygen absorbers to put in each bag or bucket and they can cost a pretty penny.

On the mylar bags, the 5 -gallon ones look pretty nice for big families and the 2-gallon ones look pretty nice for only myself as I am only one to be calling myself a prepper so I will use the 2-gallon bags. I have decided not to use the mylar bags as I have waited a long time for them to come in the mail and they sent me the 4×6 sized bags instead of the 2- gallon sized ones that I ordered. I have wasted enough time waiting already.

This is what they sent me! I guess I could stock bubble gum in them. Twenty of these useless, and too tiny little bags. Ugg. I am not happy.

I can just see getting 15 lbs of wheat berries in there and 25 lbs of dried corn also. So I will use my homemade absorbers and a hand-full of bay leaves also in each 5-gallon bucket that I make up.

I am sorry if you already knew this! I am trying to help the others that do not know.

I would be thankful for small donations to my site and they are very welcomed by me, and would help me to prep more If I have helped you, please consider helping me out with small things.

Thank you for visiting my page and please come back.

I am not a professional prepper or teacher on food storage, but I have canned-dehydrated-frozen-gardened and prepared foods from scratch, all of my life, and these things work for me. I did find the cat litter remedy on https://www.PREAPSTEADERS.com so I give this beautiful awesome lady the credit for this tip.
