July 2020 Preppers

Make your own absorbers

This is for the preppers out there. You know who you are, the ones that believe in storing food. I believe even 10 years would do for the times that we are in today! I have decided that I am not happy with this procedure using steel wool so I am making changes to use the cat litter ,absorbent crystals, method instead.

You use the new type of unscented, mini crystals. These absorb all moisture and has no smell. I just use an envelope and put 6 tbsp. in it, Then I seal the envelope and fill a food-grade bucket with wheat berries and then place on the top of the berries and seal the bucket.

I did try an experiment that used a small amount of crystals in a cup. I then poured a small amount of water over the crystals and it dried up all the water. I did this twice and had the same result. Then I added three times the water to the same mix and it took some days, but I had the same good result. No water.

For a baggie of food just use paper to make a tiny envelope and put 1 tbsp. of the cat litter in it and staple, it shut. I learned this off of the internet as I was searching, so, no I have not lost my mind. On the steel wool idea, I felt that shaving might have worked their way into the stored food. So I changed this. I am so very sorry to have misled anyone.

And you want to make sure that it stays safe and editable after all that food prepping work that you had to go through and after spending a lot of money on your supplies, you could use a price break.

Well, here it is! You already know that you could be using mylar bags or not and then you still need the oxygen absorbers to put in each bag or bucket and they can cost a pretty penny.

On the mylar bags, the 5 -gallon ones look pretty nice for big families and the 2-gallon ones look pretty nice for only myself as I am only one to be calling myself a prepper so I will use the 2-gallon bags. I have decided not to use the mylar bags as I have waited a long time for them to come in the mail and they sent me the 4×6 sized bags instead of the 2- gallon sized ones that I ordered. I have wasted enough time waiting already.

This is what they sent me! I guess I could stock bubble gum in them. Twenty of these useless, and too tiny little bags. Ugg. I am not happy.

I can just see getting 15 lbs of wheat berries in there and 25 lbs of dried corn also. So I will use my homemade absorbers and a hand-full of bay leaves also in each 5-gallon bucket that I make up.

I am sorry if you already knew this! I am trying to help the others that do not know.

I would be thankful for small donations to my site and they are very welcomed by me, and would help me to prep more If I have helped you, please consider helping me out with small things.

Thank you for visiting my page and please come back.

I am not a professional prepper or teacher on food storage, but I have canned-dehydrated-frozen-gardened and prepared foods from scratch, all of my life, and these things work for me. I did find the cat litter remedy on https://www.PREAPSTEADERS.com so I give this beautiful awesome lady the credit for this tip.

Breakfast

Sausage Gravy

This is a really good breakfast or supper recipe. Especially if you make up a pan of biscuits to go with this. If you wish, you can check out my biscuit recipe and use it.

Ingredients are: 1/2 lb fresh sausage or broken patties

3 tablespoons flour 2 c. warm milk 1tsp. salt

2 tablespoons of grease a sprinkle of black pepper

I use a cast iron skillet as it is my favorite pan to cook in. Brown up the sausage, chopping it smaller as you go. When browned add 2 tablespoons of flour and be stirring this in. If to dry, then add 2 tablespoons of grease to pan. Then add the 3rd tablespoon of flour to pan. Keep stirring and coking on medium heat to get the flour cooked.

Lower the heat now too a low setting, and begin adding the warm milk by small amounts at a time. If it gets too thick, just add in more of the milk. You may not need all of the milk. But you will use most of it. Now when done, just sprinkle with black pepper and enjoy over those biscuits that hopefully you made, and enjoy.

Love and hugs from me to you. https://www.wisdomforpennies.com

Homemade Pie Crust

A pretty picture.
This is my pie crust which was delicious with fresh home-made cherry pie filling in it. But it sure is not as pretty as the first picture.

But this recipe for pie crust is my go to for every pie that I make. It is the best pie crust that I have ever made.

Making a pie crust from scratch used to intimidate me, but not anymore. And if I can do this so can you! And boy is it ever so fresh and the taste is out of this world!

The recipe is: 1 c. self-rising flour

1 tablespoon of baking powder

1/3 c. of butter or shortening 1 tsp. sugar

1/4 c. ice-water

Put your flour into a large bowl and add the sugar and baking powder.

Whisk together well and add in the butter. Use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour until it looks like little pea sized pieces.

Use a spoon to mix dough together as you add the ice-water by the tablespoon just until dough makes a ball that sticks together. It may only take 3 tablespoons of water or slightly more. But not the whole cup.

Now I put this in a covered bowl in the refridgerater for 30 minutes. Then toss some extra flour on the counter and have extra flour on the side if needed. Take the dough out and put on scattered flour on the counter and get out your rolling pin.

Start rolling the dough out from middle to sides but do a little spin turn as you are doing this constantly so that dough will roll out thin and not be overworked and tough. You will need to be throwing a little flour over the dough as it becomes sticky so it won’t stick to the counter and rolling pin.

When it is the size to drape over your pie pan then you roll it up on the rolling pin and put it in the pan. Now you remove the over-hang dough and use fingers to crimp the edges or a spoon handle could make it crimp pretty also. Use a fork to prick holes in the pie shell and bake it at 375 degrees for 10 minutes.

Now, this shell is ready to fill with coconut cream pie filling as I did in my last created pie shell that I made or any other filling that has to be baked. You have done it now! You are on your way to many beautiful pie moments.

I thank you for reading my blog and do hope that you try this. And if you wish to support my blog in any small way then I would be very grateful for your gift of kindness. I post on Thur-Sat- and Tuesdays. Please come back soon and share this blog with others’ if you wish.

Life Stories

Miracles Do Happen Today

I thought that I would tell this story that happened to me, many years ago. If you believe in God, then you will know this is true.

If you do not believe in God that,s ok too,but my heart breaks for you. As in this year of 2020, I truly believe that God is our only stability that we have to hold on too.

Going back to that time now. We all lived in a single-wide mobile home. There was my Mother-in law, my Husband,my two kids and myself in a two bedroom small trailer. We needed another bedroom at the very least, so we built on a nice bedroom for my Mother-in-law.

Oh how I loved and cherished that woman as you see, she taught me a Mother,s love. That was something that I did not receive from my own as she only wanted Son,s and no girls. Well I was the first to arrive and then all Brothers came afterwards, whom I loved them all dearly.

I know that God placed me in her path so I would not miss out. She and all my Brother,s have gone on now, but I will always love them.

Back to the rest of my story now. As soon as we finished building that room on, there came up a severe storm with tornado warnings for our area. It was for-casted to sit right over our area and not move on for many hours. We were worried about an old rotten big tree that was right by all three bedrooms of the house. We should have cut it down first but we did not. There was no need to try to sleep as it could have hit any one of the three rooms.

So we stayed up all night long as we listened to the storm howling and raging all night long. And believe you me ,my whole household were praying all through-out the night, as the storm parked right on top of us as for-casted. George the weather man was right.

So when daylight broke, we all went outside to see the damage that had been done.

This is what we saw. There were 7 big trees that were down on the ground with the roots beside our trailer and the boughs facing way away from the trailer. So the trees were all up-rooted with the root ends nearest our home. To this day it is still hard to believe that we saw this but we all did.

So that,s my story about one of God,s miracles in these days and times. If God can do this then he can do anything for you too, if you will only believe and show him that you do.

Love from me to you always. https://www.wisdomforpennies.com

I will be posting on Tuesdays-Thursdays and Saturdays for all my readers. Thank You for visiting! #God #miracles #weather #prayers answered

Meats Pressure Cooker Canner

Pressure Canning Brats

I went to Sam,s Club a while back and found a great deal on packages of brats They were doubled packaged with 7 in each pack for $7 each double pack so I got 2 of the 2 packs for a total of $14.00 for 28 nice brats.

I got this idea from the Alaska Prepper on you tube and went and found the very deal that He was talking about. So I gave him a big thank you. He has a good youtube channel.

I opened the packages and washed the meat with cold water. Then I turned on the oven to 350 degrees and put pans of meat in the oven for 18 to 20 minutes. That gave it a better texture that I was looking for so that when you open your canned jar later on, it will not be mushy. I don’t care too much for mushy meats.

Before being in the oven.

As it is only I, pint jars were my choice of jar size. I had all my jars out and ready with the seals and lids. I also had my canning tools out that I would be needing, such as the jar lifter. I also had vinegar in a small bowl with paper napkins for wiping the rims of the jar after packing it.

I had the huge canning pot filled to the lowest water line in the pot with water and going on medium boil and a folded kitchen towel on the counter right beside the pot to sit the hot jars on later when everything was finished.

The brats were warm from the oven so I just put 4 or 5 brats in each jar. The last one in needs the be cut into two or three pieces so you can push them all down into the jar. Mash it down so the air gets out, no need to de-bubble these. Wipe the rims well with vinegar and napkins. Put on the seal and band lid. Do not tighten down like a weight lifter! As everything is already very warm and hot, you do not have to sanitize lids by boiling in water!

And I do not add water to my jars that contain meat as I do not want mushy meats. Put these jars into the canner right away(That you had heating up at a medium temperature). Put lid on the pot. Do not put the jiggle weight on the pot spout yet.Do house work around the house for maybe 20 minutes, untile the spout has lots of steam spouting off.

Now put the jiggle weight on that spout. Keep checking back until you see 10 lbs of pressure on the dial. Then you set the timer for 75 minutes for pint jars or 90 minutes for quart jars if you have a larger family than 1. Also Google your altitude for canning pressure lb if you do not live in Florida like I do. And boy is it ever hot this year in Florida!

When time is up just turn off the stove and wait until pressure is at ZERO. Then open the lid away from your face as it is hot in there. Use the jar lifter right beside the pot and set your jars on the kitchen towel right beside the pot as jars are heavy.

Listen for my favorite sound now (PING). That means the jar is sealed. Leave everything alone for many hours until cold or even the next day. Then wast outside of jars with hot soapy water and remove the bands. Write name of contents and date on the lid. Store in a dark place for up to 3 years or even more. I hope you will do this and learn to can meat as it is awesome to open the jar and just add something with it to have a fast ready dinner for the next few years at least.

Sending you love and prayers. https://wisdomforpennies.com/?p=503

Banana Cough Syrup

I tried this last year and it worked for me. I do not know if it will work on you? My Son tells me Mama you have to add this so I am. I am not a Dr., I am just a Mama with a heart to help people.

Ok Isaiah, I have said it!

Anyway let me get back to this remedy.

Ingredients are: Two peeled bananas 2 Tablespoons of honey

1 2/3 cup of water boiled

Put bananas in food blender and mix up. Then you stir the bananas into the boiled water and let it cool down, before you add in 2 Tablespoons of honey.

I take 2 or 3 Tablespoons daily when I have a bad cough. It does have a good taste. Now as for this mess going around in the world now, I would advise you go to the Dr. for your cough syrup needs!

I took this when I had a simple cold/flu. But what’s out in this world right now is nothing to take lightly. Love to you all!

Brown Recluse Spider Bite

This is the brown recluse spider. This spider is very very harmful!
This spider does not play. You will hardly know you’ve been bitten until later on.

These photos are going to get ugly so if you have a week stomach then stop now!
At day one it might look like a target with 2 fang marks and then day 3 you may look this!

The poison they inject can eat a whole in your body as big as a large marble. I am not a Dr. I have seen this in waiting rooms at the Dr.s for years now. So I prefer to stop the flesh-eating poison on myself. I don,t know about you, but this works for me it is a simple remedy that I have used for years and it may not work for you, but it might.

I do not want to look like this and this is what a brown recluse, simple looking spider that you don’t even feel when you get bitten until much later, can do to you.
I am sorry that this is ugly but brown recluse spiders, might do this to you.

I have been bitten a few times and I did not know when I got the bite, but as my skin started changing and burning like acid, then I knew that I had to stop this poison from eating my flesh, fast, I have seen people that let it get to the worst photo on here. So I do not take this lightly! And with all the clinic closures and Dr.s not seeing everyone now due to Covid. You might try this and see if it works for you.

If you get the poison out then it cannot continue to be a flesh-eater. I use charcoal as my first treatment. If you don’t have the kind from the drug store, then go to your grilling supplies and get a piece of plain charcoal (not fast flame type). The fast light has chemicals in it. Put a brickette in a baggie and hit it with a hammer to break it up a little. It,s nice to have a bag prepared with your medical supplies!

You just take a piece and rub it on the bite, it should look like a target with two fang holes in the bite. That,s the first look. Keep on for two hours then wash off with soapy water and put calamine lotion on it for two hours. Calamine is made from chalk and it is a drawer.

Keep rotating the charcoal and calamine all day long every two hours. Next, I hope that you keep an aloe plant in your flower garden! You cut a medium to large leaf and cut the thorns off and peel one side of a three- inch leaf piece. You are now going to be using just the aloe as it is a healer plant. Just keep this on the bathroom sink and every time you go in there rub some more of this gel on the bite, When this dries out, just cut a new piece and keep using for about three days and nights. It is nice to have an aloe plant for many things.

All of these healing items are harmless and should not hurt you or even children. Again. I am not a Dr. but I have read and studied these things my entire life as they are interesting to know what the older generations used when they could not get to a Dr.

I think we may have come full circle about getting to the Drs. now as this world is almost shut down. Lov and Hugs from me to you as always! Please take the time to share my website with your friends, as this is the reason for the blog, to help people.

Vanilla Butternut Cake

Check back later for a surprise recipe. Ok it’s here now! This one is called Vanilla Butter Nut Cake. I t is an old recipe from way back. When you smell this one baking in the oven’ it will drive you wild and it’s that good so it does not need any kind of topping or frosting.

This one stands on its on and takes all the compliments to itself!

Forty years ago my Mother-in-law made this special cake for her Son as it was his absolute favorite. He is gone now but Dear Sweet Alice is still around and I know she is still cooking up some wonderful meals as she did way back when!

Now all of you know that I love to put the photo up on my blog for you to see the results but I just can’t be eating everything I cook up so you will have to take my word on this one! It will be worth it!

Ingredients are:A bottle of Imatation Vanilla Butter and Nut Flavoring

(I find this at Save-A-Lot) and have seen it at other Grocers.

1/2 cup of shortening (Crisco). 2 sticks butter (Cream this toghether with a mixer).

3 cups of sugar with 1/4 tsp. of salt (Add this to mixer).

6 eggs (Add one at a time).

3 cups of self-rising flour (add to this) 1 cup of milk and two Tablespoons of flavoring from the bottle.

Add all this gradually into the mixer bowl. Heat oven to 325 degrees and ( grease very well) and flour a tube pan (like the fruit cake pans). Pour into prepared pan and slowly bake for 70 minutes ( 1 hour and 10 minutes). Let sit and cool down at least 25 minutes before you remove from pan.

Again this cake stands on it’s own, it is that good! Needs nothing else with it. I hope you will try this awesome cake as it it a fabulous recipe to have and to cherish! Love and Hugs from me to you!

Sausage Meatballs

Cooked and ready for the freezer.
And some sausage patties also ready for the freezer.

I don’t know about how you feel about fast and ready meals right out of of the freezer and quick to the table. But in these hot Summer days, I am all for it! So if I prep one thing in the oven, why not do two.

I prefer sausage that is not loaded down with spices as I do not care for heartburn to awefull much. So I like to buy mine at Save A Lot Grocery store, where the prepare it so that you can see through the package and it is ready to patty it out and cook.I do not get heartburn from their brand.

Now the ones that are in round patties did come from Walmart as that was the store that I got a ride to earlier than my ride to Save A Lot a few days later. These are for my sausage and egg and cheese mac-muffins alacarta Connie,s MacDonald,s look alikes. Except I,m sorry, these taste better!

Now as for the round meat balls all I did was to use a small icecream scoop and make sausage balls to put on a tin-foil lined tray (to dispose) of the grease later for easy pan clean up. And I just sprinkled my favorite spice on them, which is Accent.Bake thes at 350 degrees for 55 minutes.

There are many ways to use these as a sausage sub or as sausage on a pizza or as I did with a little recipe I created yesterday also, after I did these up. I happened to be in a cooking mood as I also made that wild berry cobbler also at the same time, so why not create another recipe!

I will post that in a few days time,so keep checking back if you will! I love to see that you have come back to my blog site. Love and Hugs from me to you. https://www.wisdomforpennies.com
